Is it necessary to have the heater core installed?

This is probably a dumb question but is there any reason (besides to have a heater) that the heater core needs to be installed in the car?

My car will be painted soon and I am quickly going broke as a result but I would like to assemble the car and get it on the road. I have a few more essential things to buy, like a radiator and transmission. I had originally planned to install vintage air system but I live in Southern California and I can live without AC so I am either going to need to buy a factory or remanufactured heater core and fan or just get the car running and install that later. But if it comes down to it, I would like to purchase what I need to get the car running so I can drive it (been a long time) and just install heater later.

Are there any aftermarket systems that are just heat and defrost but no AC?

Thanks for the replys. Since I filled all of the holes in my firewall (except the large hole in the support leg) I am thinking there might be a creative solution like using a heater core and fan from a late model car that keeps everything under the dash and I could run the lines through the large hole in the firewall sort of like the Vintage Air system does.
