It's actually not legal to buy and sell vin tags and titles, usually you can get the department of motor vehicles to issue a new vin and title... If I did purchase a vin I would not let anyone know about it, it would be a secret between the seller and me... And still not sure I would trust the seller...

Things like this are best kept behind closed garage doors...

i understand but i need at least a replacement vin tag for i can punch the title numbers in or it lloks like i may need a donor car to switch vins and titles michigan is real easy to get away with this sort of stuff

 

He may be able to use the orig. title if he can show the DMV the matching VIN # that is stamped into the frame under the drivers side seat. It ts difficult to find with the body on, but has been done. This would be the correct way to try to get a VIN plate from a DMV. To buy a VIN plate and title is illlegle as far as I know.

 

This is the ridft way to do it,get a state assigned number that matches frame.

Is the frame from a tri-5? If so it will have a serial number, but it doesn't have all the characters of a vin number. If it's an aftermarket or home built frame, the state will assign a vin number if you have enough paper work to prove to them that you own it.

After reading all of these posts again, I guess the one post that bothers me the most is the one above. Looks like jgrames has an answer for everything including the fact that he swapped frames so that number wouldn't match at DMV. But the above statement is just wild if you think about.

jgrames isn't the only one hoping that. Just about every thief in the country's life would be so much easier if you could do that......

The original tags are stainless steel and won't rust.

 

I don't believe that is entirely correct. The edges on the stainless steel Vin tag on my 1960 corvette are rusted away. It all depends on what grade stainless steel the manufacturer used. 409 and 430 stainless will rust nearly as fast as steel and they are magnetic to boot!

I've heard of a guy who makes trim tags, rumors of a guy who does Vpn tags but I hear he's very demanding of documentation before he will produce one.

I feel so strongly about this that if in fact I personally find out about anyone selling Vin Tags and letting the buyer of that VIN TAG stamp it therself. There is just about no end I won't go to, to see that is the last one the sucker sells.

If you need a Vin Tag replaced then do it the right way, if you insist on trying to sneak in the back door, I hope you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar!!!!

I agree one hundred percent. I've also had a vehicle stolen (a jeep set up for rock crawling). It was recovered minus a ton of parts.
