over/center spring

I have been reading your posts for several days now, trying to get an answer for my clutch problem. I used to have a Borg and beck clutch years ago, and I had to let the car set 15 years. Now I am able to work on it again but my wife and I are a little older than the b&b clutch days. Is there a way to put a diaphragm clutch in and still leave the over/center spring hooked up? Some of the post I read guys have unhooked them, and some guys were hooking the over/center spring back up. The one thing i remember about the b&b clutch was the steady pressure all the way down. But now a diaphragm clutch seems to be the way to go, but I am confused. Will a diaphragm clutch work properly with o/c spring still hooked up? Can I use the diaphragm clutch and have a steady pressure all the way down? Or will I have to take off the over/center spring.

The cause of the clutch pedal staying on the floor, with a diaphragm clutch, was caused by incorrectly adjusted clutch linkage and compounded by the pressure plate design. Currently available diaphragm pressure plates have a conical shape where the throwout bearing contacts. You won't have a problem leaving the over center spring attached to your linkage. If you eliminate it you still need a return spring to keep the bearing off the pressure plate. I recently installed a McLeod Street Pro diaphragm single plate clutch in my '55 and the pedal effort is very smooth and light.

Thanks Fogger for the reply. I went ahead and ordered a diaphragm clutch after reading your post. I was a little confused why some people leave the o/c spring hooked up, and others unhook it. You mentioned McLeod clutches, I called and talked to the tech there and he thought that i would have to unhook the o/c spring and add one down by the fork. So, one step at a time I guess.
