Phasing U-joints

I'm sure someone in the forum has noticed that Uni-Steer seems to be the only company that recommends phasing the steering u-joints "out of phase", that is each u-joint is 90 degrees out from the other. The way they do this is to use a splined shaft on one end of the double D shaft. I read a long article from New Zealand which has a history of very tough regulations towards modified cars. You can see their explanations of why they never recommend phased or timed u-joints in the memo they sent out. How about some discussion on this. Perhaps we have some Uni-Steer or Flaming River techs on board.

I think it all boils down to the severity of angle. If its a quite shallow angle, it wouldn't matter. If you're trying to steer while sitting in the trunk backwards and have 18 u-joints, I'm sure it would matter significantly! I know some cars have a pretty sharp angle on both ends of the u-joints so those would certainly need this.
