My apologies for asking this question in two separate areas on this site. I'm still learning how to do this....

I have a freshly painted 1957 Bel air and the bumpers look rough. I was given a re-chrome price of $4,300 versus a replace cost of $1,200. I have been trying to keep things original but at 3.5 times the replacement cost i wonder if this is wise. Help!

Thanks in advance for your expertise...this is my first classic car!

Just so you know I just had 2 bumpers rechromed and straightened for 450 ea.
Those were off my grandsons 62 ford galaxie, these were as big if not bigger than a 57 chevy bumper. So imo the price you were quoted is way toooo high.
I would call around I think you could do better.

As far as new ones repo bumpers are not as good of quality or strength as orig.

good luck with your 57 !

Bumpers

I have a '57 and installed repops front & rear. Front is excellent fit. Some have commented that they rear doesn't fit well and original rear should be rechromed. In my experience the repop rear doesn't fit any worse than original. I don't have the resources that Chip Foose does.

No, they are scratched and scuffed up a bit but no real damage. On the side of front bumper it appears like the piece above the bumper rested on and it has a gouge in it.

Do I go to the internet to call around for other places to do this work or are there suggestions you might have??

Thanks again,

Ron

I was quoted $600 each for my '56 truck bumpers, which I thought was outrageous. I bought rechromed smoothies from a company in California (at the Portland Swap Meet) for $300 each with no core charge. They are may not be 100% concours show quality, but they're pretty darned nice. Shop around!

One of our sponsors here, concourse trim replates bumpers. I bought a rear center bumper for my 57 at the trifive nationals that looks really good. They can do show chrome or street chrome. As the others have said, some of the repro stuff is excellent, some not so hot. Also, Don's East Coast Chevy replates bumpers on either an exchange basis or if you want your own parts done, they will do that, just takes a speck longer. Prices seem reasonable, a lot more reasonable that the $4300 you were quoted anyhow.

Looks like you are in Ohio. I had a bunch of stuff chromed in Cincinnati several years ago.Front and rear bumpe s, hood bar and extensions, etc. and I think I paid around $1,200 for everything. Don't remember the name of the lace, sorry.
Check around, $4300 is outrageous!
