I was reading the other day in here where the guys were talking about moving the rad closer to the fan because the engine was heating up when in traffic, etc. & now I can't find where I was at . The engine was rebuilt 11,600 miles ago, new rad, new thermo, new rad cap ( 7 lb. recommended ), new hoses, new temp gauge, a shroud, & I am going to replace the sending unit but thought I would do the rad move first, any suggestions as to how close I can move the rad with out causing any damage or is there something I can also check ? thanks, Ivan.

thanks Zbad55, I was wondering about that but I was told it would be better, I will pull the electric off & see once I reset the distance between my rad & mechanical fan .
As David mentioned, if you have a shroud, the distance from the radiator doesn't matter as long as the fan is half in and half out of the back edge of the shroud. The V-8 position radiator is behind the core support. The 6-cyl position, the radiator is in front of the core support.
