Would like to power the car temporarily while the motor is out to confirm a few things. What power wires do I need to hook to battery? Also can I ground the battery to the body/frame to complete the circuit or do I need to ground any wires from the engine harness?

Engine ground needed for any energized engine functions ( coil, temp, elec choke, oil pressure if elec. sensed. Otherwise not needed. Locate the small black wire that runs from your starter solenoid to your ignition switch and all circuits feed from it. Ground body and frame.

If it's stock wiring, you can connect the black wire, (that goes to the ignition switch from the starter solenoid), to the battery positive and connect the battery negative to the body. The original negative battery strap was connected to the body. https://www.trifive.com/garage/55%20Chevy%20Assembly%20Manual/12-11.gif
Make sure the wires that go to the generator and regulator are insulated (taped) from shorting out.
