Terminator X and 4l85e trans controler ?

I got my car back on the road after a 6 year build, however I have a few bugs to workout.
Engine: 427 BB, trans 4l85e GM tcm, Fuel injection, Terminator X ecu.
Engine runs fine, trans shifts 1 through 3 but no overdrive or lockup function.
My research shows that the 4l85e needs the Terminator X Max ecu to interface with the the tcm.
My question is has anyone else gone through this and is there any other solution other than buying a $1,100. ecu and the $275 harness ?
If not I will have a $875 Terminator x ecu for sale.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

The X Max becomes the TCM. You plug it into the transmission and set your parameters in the Terminator X program. From there, you can set your shift points etc. Since you have just the MAX, you will need a stand alone controller, which you might have, or go with the X MAX ECU/harness. For a decent standalone you are going to be about 2/3rds the cost of the X MAX upgrade. TCI sells a controller fairly cheap. Compushift, FAST EZTCU are some others, and they go,up in price from there.

Thanks for your reply's
I have the controller, harness and software that came with the unit I bought from Summit ( pn 19332780), this is a very pricy unit if I can't use it.
The engine is a BB 427 with 8 stack fuel injection, it has all the sensors including the TPS, I'm not knowledgeable on the GM controller to know if it's standalone or can be made to work with the Terminator X ecu.
I have a guy that thinks he knows how to make my ecu and GM controller work, however I would like to have any do's and don'ts, what works and won't prior to turning my car over to him.
Thanks again.

Your Terminator X will control the engine only. Your TCM should be able to control your trans. The plug 180 degrees out is a real thing, but usually you only get a 1-2 shift. If you need to split the TPS signal, use a quality splitter or do a good splice. The Terminator X is prone to screwing up with any interference. You might get repeated TPS reset messages if everything isn't sanitary. The newer ECU's seem to handle it better. I am not sure how old your ECU is.

I appreciate all your help, I'm working with a shop that has suggested replacing the X with the X Max (554-153) and associated trans harness ( 558-405 ). here's hoping all this works.
Thanks again.

The GMPP controller is standalone. pn 19332780 and will work...

You DON't NEED the max just yet. Fix what you have.

The Transmission Control Harness requires connections to
1. The transmission (20 pin),
2. The output speed sensor (OSS)
3. Input Speed Sensor (ISS) on 4L80E
4. The Transmission Control Unit (TCU)
5. The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on the carburetor
6. The tach lead on the distributor cap (carbureted engines)
7. Ignition power (12v with key in run position)
8. Battery power (12v at all times)
9. Battery ground (battery negative terminal or solid engine ground).

Are these all hooked up?

Is the TPS sensor hooked up?
And the tach lead???

Thank you for the above information, I was a DIY'er until I developed a vision problem, I had a shop do all the wiring trusting that it would be done right, a move from Idaho back to Calif. keeps me from taking it back to them.
I don't know if it's assembled correctly, the engine runs well ( much to loud, next correction needed), trans appears to shift 1/3 no lockup or OD. I have an appointment with a reputable shop in hope's they can correct the problem.

New question
I have ordered the Terminator X Max and trans harness, the question is will the current Terminator X engine harness and handheld tuner connect to the X Max or is there other items I need to order ?
Holley is closed on weekends or I'd ask them.
Thanks.

Only real difference is gonna be the ECU size means a couple more mounting holes further apart, and some minor wiring. You will need a brake light wire hooked into the trans harness, gray wire and you will need a clean ignition wire to the trans harness, red wire. By clean I mean not the same ignition wire as the ECU.

Holley states :

The power supplying this wire must NOT be tied to the same point that the ECU switched power wire (red/white wire) is
connected to. If they are tied together, the transmission power will back-feed power to the ECU and the ECU/engine will not
shut off when the key is turned off. Use a relay or separate switched ignition power pickup point to supply power to the
transmission harness.
Thanks Hotrod & Had a few.
Your information makes things much easier for me.

Of course you will also need to go into the Terminator program and enable the transmission ICF, it's under the toolbox tab. You will select the right transmission file. Once that is enabled, your gearshift icon will be active in the top bar. Click on it and you will select your trans type, max RPM, tire diameter, gear ratio, speedo enable etc. If you need any help with the setup let me know. I can send you some screen shots of the setup screens.
Excellent, your help is much appreciated.

Update:
Terminator X Max is installed and the transmission now has overdrive.
I found a guy in my area that is a wiz at tuning, he installed the X Max, went through the old tune, corrected any readings that were out of whack, adjusted transmission shift points, setup the ECU to communicate with the digital dash, set up the radio ( I'm a old guy, new radio's are beyond my knowledge ).
I'm pleased, the car runs great, sounds good and with OD I'm turning 1900 rpm at 70 mph.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
