*Type II Power Steering Pump with Remote Reservoir

Hello! Hope everyone is going great.
I am starting to research my options for converting my 57 to Power Steering. One think that I am considering is using a Type II power steering pump. The reason I am considering a Type II pump is because I added a Danchuk metal fan shroud which I do not want to cut into which will be required if I use a conventional pump. Has anyone use a Type II pump with a v-belt system? Any major modification needed to mount it to a 350? Any issues with the remote reservoir? Any types would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have one on my 57 that's in paint prison now, but consider what type motor mounts you have. Different brackets available for your setup. Also think about what hoses you want to use (rubber or AN type). Some of the type II pumps have diff. fittings. Reservoir can mount almost anywhere. Also consider short or long WP, and pulleys on your crank. Pretty easy installation if you have the right parts. :anim_25:

Why would a pump with an integral reservoir interfere with a fan shroud? I don't think it will unless the extra pulley is too far forward. If that's the case, the type II will likely have the same problem. You might have this type of problem with a radiator in the V8 location, along with a long water pump setup.

You usually don't see type II pumps with v-belt systems. That's because they came on cars with serpentine systems. So you see them on late model serpentine setups and on aftermarket serpentine setups. Not that it couldn't be done, but finding parts to do it may be a problem.

If you have a clearance problem, maybe you need to move the radiator forward. Or maybe the engine is too far forward.

The Danchuk instructions say the trimming is for pulley clearance.

A type II pump still has a pulley in the same location as the old school pump - so they both are going to have the same problem.

The solution to this would be to move the radiator from behind the radiator support to in front of it (6 cylinder location).

I think the mods are needed with a short WP and front mount pump brackets, with the PS pump belt on the third row (outermost) crank pulley. In this application the pump pulley is fairly shallow, i.e., the pulley groove is farther away from the engine.

If you have a long WP and the PS pump is using the first groove (innermost) crank pulley, the pump pulley is more backspaced and therefore may not interfere with the shroud.

Again, I have not done this install myself, this is feedback from one customer. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has installed the shroud with power steering.
