The 57 uses different side shells and the seat/padding is contoured slightly differently.

But they all bolt down to your floor the same way.

 

The 55,56 seat backs are about 5" thick with an overhang/ledge on the back side/top.
The 57 seat back is thinner, about 4" thick and the top comes to more of a tapered point at the top middle.

Other than the shape, if you wanted one to use as is, all three years had (at least) three seperate designs - one for each model.

 

Thanks for the info guys! I currently have a 65 split seat in the car, but it's a little too wide and contacts the door panels. Just wanted to know what to look for in case I see something out there!

No, It will fit with mounting modifications but it is a completely different seat.

 

I went to look at a seat yesterday from a 55 or 56. The owner wants $650, but is open to offers. I'm thinking that I'll keep looking for a 57.

I agree! I paid $350 for this one this past winter....... and I am in Canada:beer:

 

650.00 isn`t too far off the average. I sold one for 500.00 7-8yrs ago. A 57 seat is averaging 750.00 these days.

That's what I'm thinking! I'm nowhere near needing it just yet, so I'm thinking I have some time yet. I really think I'd prefer proper 57 seat as well.

I saw 2 seats at the swap meet today. The first was a 55/56 2dr seat, price...750.00. The second was a 57 2dr seat, price....900.00. Good deals on them are few and far between from my experience.

I'm finding that it's not as easy as it seems, at least here in Canada. I looked at a 55/56 last week, he was asking 650, but said he was open to offers. I do have a line on a 57 front and rear seat that the guy is asking 900 for, but I'm having a hard time getting some pictures from him, he says they're in storage. I'm slowing working with him, plus I have some ads out there. I'm thinking I could always find something from a late model to use for now and if, when, I find a seat, then I could re-cover it and install it.

Are the actual metal frames on a 55, 56, 57 the same and just the foam contours different making the 55-56 have the bump out on the back that's not there on the 57? Meaning, if you found one in rough shape, could you purchase new foam and covering to make a 55-56 into a 57?

Are Pontiac seats the same as the Chevy? Again, if you found one in rough shape, could you purchase new foam and covering to make a Pontiac into a 57 Chevy?

Dave, as far as I know, all the tri's have the same mounting, so they probably have the same frames. BTW, I just realized a few weeks ago that the one 57 in the nearby yard has a 55 seat in it.
I don't know about the Ponchos, they might be different - and probably harder to find!

I'm sure Terry is right in regards to Pontiac seats not being the same as Chevy but if the seats came out of a Canadian Pontiac they may be the same because the Canadian Pontiacs shared most everything with Chevys.

I have a 55 Pontiac seat that I might put in my car. It bolts to the floor in the same location as the Chevybut might sit a little taller than the Chevy due to the way the seat rails are attached to the seat frame. The shells are different. I am sure some modification would be required to install Chevy seat shells. Would be nice to have a Pontiac and Chevy seat sitting side by side.

I took a few pictures of the US Pontiac seat and attempted to hold a tape measure for reference. If somone could measure the seat height of a Chevy seat we would know the difference. Maybe swapping the seat rails would bring it back down to the Chevy height.
