Roger....The part you describe is the capillary tube....I forget its function in the system....Hoever, here is the illustration of it from the Assembly Manual: http://www.trifive.com/garage/57 Chevy Assembly Manual/101-2.gif

Thanks so much for the reply. Looks to me like the part that I am calling the "top" somehow connects to the water control valve. Do you know if that is correct?

I just e-mailed you 5 drawings showing the removal and installation of the core, control valve and capillary tube. These drawings are from "How To Restore Your 1957 Chevy" which I believe is still available from classicchevy.com and is of great value for all trifive owners.
