9 inch axle seal replacement

I have a 9 inch rear with a leaking seal. Looks like it is leaking from the outer edge of the seal, but it might be from where the seal runs on the axle. The question is.....can I get the seal? I have it all pressed apart and the bearing looks good. I have the part numbers for Timken U365L and U399A on the bearing and race. There is no number on the seal however. The axles are the large end, 3.150 OD, 1.563 ID. Attached is the bearing I have and the seal in red.

I was also seeing another type of bearing that is sealed and has an outer O ring for the same size housing. Here is one>>>> Axle Bearing With Locking Collar

A question on that. Since the seal makes up part of the entire height, where the retainer plate holds.....is this sealed type bearing a little taller to make up for not having the seal in there anymore? And, I guess another question would be are they any better at not leaking than the other style.

I suppose if I could just find that seal......if not, since I am going to buy a bearing I want to get whatever has the best chance of not leaking.

Thanks, Mark

Short answer yes you can buy the seal separately. This type of seal and bearing set up was only used in trucks with 31 spline axles. It was intended to be H/D and as far as I am concerned it is JUNK. That a close look inside the housing and see if there is a machined surface for a seal. If so you can pull the outer race out of the housing and get a seal and roller bearing like most other 9" Fords used if not you have what you have. If you must go back with this type of bearing and seal you can add a small bead of RTV on the inside of the housing where the seal will fit.

On the type of seal you have now go to NAPA, Advance, Autozone, or any parts house and tell them to look up an axle seal, for a 1977 78 79 Ford F 100. If memory serves me I think the NAPA # is the same as a National seal # but don't hold me to that. I think Pops daughter works at a NAPA store. He might be able to talk to her and help you out with a part #. I used to have an old seal book cross reference some where. I will see if I can find it and if so get back to you.

Most places around here (NAPA, Autozone, Oreilley's) have none in stock, or in there warehouse. Carquest said they found one, and was skeptical since his inventory showed it was the only one in the country. Probably another item that regularly comes from overseas......and now that chain has been interrupted.

I think they will list an item " as only one left order soon" so you will go ahead with your purchase if you are on the fence or have looked elsewhere and having you think you just found the last one in the world and the next time you look there will be several available I have had this happen to me more than once.
