I am swaping a 454 bbc into my 1955 and i have a couple questions. Has anybody done this and used the eckler side mounts with a 500 steering box? I like that eckler claims no fire wall modifications required but i noticed in there installation pdf it says will only work with there rack and pinion setup. Ive seen some guys on here saying they have done this with the 500 box, does anyone have pictures? Also has anyone had engine accessorie problems with the engine being moved 2 1/4" forward?

There's 3 ways to do a BBC swap, you have to decide which is for you.

1. Mount the engine with the rear of the engine in the stock SBC location, usually with a commercially available side mount kit. This means you need to do some serious surgery on the firewall because the heads will hit it. You may need to modify the oil pan to clear the steering linkage. A 500 steering box might clear.

2. Mount the engine with a 3/4" forward side mount kit. You will have to do minor clearancing on the firewall adjacent to the passenger side head. You will have to modify the oil pan or buy a commercial one built for the swap. This scheme will clear a CPP500 or Borgeson steering box if the exhaust is done right. Clearance up front with the radiator and accessory drive is tight but works if you have the right parts and mount the radiator in front of its support (6 cylinder position).

3. Mount the engine further forward yet (1-1/4" - 2-1/4"). There are commercial mounts to do either. The firewall clearance gets to be ok. Oil pan to steering linkage is going to be a serious problem and that's where you might need to buy Ecklers rack if you use their mounts. Still is going to require a modified oil pan. The clearance in front becomes smaller and may restrict you to certain parts.

Header clearance can be dealt with on all 3. You can buy full length headers that clear a 500 box if you use #2.

The only way I would consider is #2, and that's probably the most common way, but the others can be made to work.

Agree with Rick on method #2....I believe Williams Chassis Works has the best kit and customer service available.

I have CCI/Ecklers 2.25 forward with 500 PS box it works very well. Yes I run a notched Moroso pan, I don't think my tune ran would work with 3/4 forward.
What headers are you using?

Sounds like option #2 will work the best for me. I already have the moroso notched pan and hooker swap headers that i picked up at a swap meet.

Do any of you have a recomendation on what 3/4 forward mounts work best? Or would it just be simpler for me to make my own.

Also i will be running an alternator, power steering pump and mechanical water pump. Is there a specific make and model of car that you guys have had success with using the accessory brackets from? Or any aftermarket ones?

Thanks.

The Earle Williams mounts are the best, period
Totally agree with Rick...Give Earle a call and tell him what you are up to....Unlike a multitude of "big box" suppliers, they can give you personal attention for your issues and concerns.
