The general conseus is that Boyd Coddington was a lazy, tyrannical, giant dick while Chip Foose is one of the hardest working, talented, nicest guys on earth. These may be extreme opinions but, based on what has been seen on TV, are probably close to the truth, although TV shows are usually scripted to give the viewer what the producer wants them to see.

To some extent, it's not fair or accurate to compare the two men; only their products tell the story. Boyd's shop puts out custom, hand made and one of a kind show cars. Chip's shop puts out mild customs.

What you saw on TV at Boyd's shop was the creation from ground up of a custom car, with a custom interior and paint. What you saw on TV at Chip's shop was body work, dechroming, super paint job, new engine, new interior and new wheels on a stock car. These are two entirely concepts with little comparison. Boyd was a manager with a vision who had workers bring that vision to life. Chip is a hands-on designer who has workers help bring his designs to life.

This, in Chip's own words, is his statement regarding Boyd,
"The tension was on Boyd's side. I worked with him for 8 years and loved every minute. When he went bankrupt in 98 is when my wife and I were forced to start our own business. The talented employees from Boyd's wanted to work with us and Boyd was unhappy about it. I have no ill feelings for Boyd. Would have stayed there forever if the shop was still running."

Finally, something you didn't know about the Chip Foose family as told by Boyd Coddington shortly before he died - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnoDheY6RMI (ignore the title of the video, it has nothing to do with the video's content)

Most likely the most fair comparison of the two. No respect for Coddington. Respect Foose a lot, don't want him to style my 55. But if he did, I could correct those small things in a Chevy HeartBeat. :congrats: :bowtier:

Not sure this is accurate, Overhaulin, etc. only show some of Foose's work. He is a multiple winner of the Riddler award. Google some pictures of cars Chip has built, they are ground up full custom cars.

I have never met either, have seen the TV shows. I cannot say I saw any episode that showed Boyd actually hands on grinding, fabbing, etc. He just walked around and maybe held something.

Chip foose was always fabbing up something for the overhaulin cars.

Both Boyd and Foose did full custom work as well as milder stuff. It would be fair to say that Boyd is more known for full custom stuff. What makes some form their opinion is what was done for TV as opposed to their entire body of work. One reason for this is that TV can't capture the full custom build that might take 6-24 months to build.

I also think that Boyd let the TV producers paint him as a bad guy - and exaggerated that. On the other hand he let them.

And while I've never met Foose, I think if you were to meet and know him, he real life personality would be similar to what's on TV.

I like them both and don't really care how their personality is as it doesn't affect me at all. I like both of their work as they do great looking cars. With that being said, who knows where Foose would be if Boyd didn't hire him, I'm sure he learned a lot from Boyd. You don't get to be where both men are/were without a great talent for cars. Another builder I like is Troy Trepanier, he does some cool stuff also.

I think Foose would have done fine without Boyd, but Boyd probably brought him to excellence and into the spotlight sooner.

Troy T does some really nice stuff. I had a chance to meet him and talk with him at Bonneville a few years back - he's a down to earth guy and answered all our questions. He built the 69 Barracuda that George Poteet owns that went 319 mph that year. I think Poteet has had Boyd and Foose build him cars too. He has a lot of guys building cars for him and sometimes they get their first fame from building for him.
