Got back to the house today....Did the check on the pushrod length.....Looked great to me.....The wear pattern is perfectly in the center of the valve stem.....Should be firing this engine up tomorrow

 

Thanks guys.....I know how to do it and will do it....Is it crucial that its done, before I ever fire it up.....Or do I just need to make sure its done, before I start putting some miles on the engine.....Its on the stand now just about ready to go.

Before is best.

 

If you are running stock lifters and stock valves, you should be able to run the L31 pushrods without any problems.

Just about any other change potentially affects the pushrod length.

-Milling the heads.
-Change of pushrod cup location with respect to the cam base circle.
-Any component change that moves the height of the valve tip - longer valve, lash cap, deep valve job, etc.

Take a Sharpie and mark the top of the valve stem, roll the motor over by hand, pull the rocker and make sure the scrub marks on the stem are really close to center. If not it's time for different length pushrods.

Best way to measure correctly is with a pushrod length checker.

 

Dave, Pushrod length is very critical. Summit and Jegs sell a simple pushrod checker, with the rocker arm off and the lifter on the heel of the camshaft the checker is placed on the rocker stud and if it touches the valve stem and pushrod you're close. Next put machinist dye on the top of the valve stem and place the roller rocker on and set the per load. Rotate the engine a couple of revolutions and check the valve stem for contact. The contact pattern should be centered on the stem if the pushrod is the correct length. Ron:gba:
