Maybe a reproduction smaller diameter wheel. Looks like an original but smaller diameter.

 

The repros are around 15". Might as well keep the lame grant wheel. Im thinking maybe getting some square stock from home depot and bringing the seats up a bit. we'll see.

 

What are you having problems with, are the buckets too low for you or is the wheel to big?

You can raise the seat with adaptor plates, or fab some up, not much you can do to alter the wheel, they are big but if you do not have pwr steering it makes it easier to turn :anim_25:

 

Well, both kind of. If the seats where higher the steering wheel size wouldnt be so bad and if the wheel was smaller the seat level would be ok. Going to work on bringing the seats up a few inches.

 

Other than raising the seats... not much you can do! I remember I always had to look around the top of the horn ring to see my speedo... an accident sovled that, when I was polishing the ring (off the wheel).. I snapped the top off by accident. So I filed the nubs that were still protruding to be even with the spokes of the wheel, when I put the wheel back on the car I will only have the bottom portion of the horn ring... cool with me!

 

Try a later wheel

Most of the guys back in the late 50's changed their trifive steering wheels to a 58-60 Impala wheels. They look sharp and are about 1-1/2" smaller diameter if I remember right.

Guys in the 70's like me used 59-60 Impala wheels too. In fact my car has one on it now. I will post my original wheel in the for sale section. Jim

 

those stock steering wheels are tough and good for non powering steering cars, but everything is power steering now. I'm running one off of a nova / camaro...got my air force coin in the middle. 15" wheel is perfect. feels right.

 

The thought of what you said brought back memories... Years ago there used to be this little old lady here in town who looked everything like Madame the puppet. She drove around in this big ol' 1960's Buick and she had to look through the steering steering wheel to see where she was going. I just tried to stay out of her way! :anim_25:

 

Keep in mind that raising your seat's going
to leave you less clearance for your thighs
below the larger original steering wheel.
Does your '56 already have power steering?
If so a 15" steering wheel is the way to go,
as others have stated.:anim_25:
