Which springs 4 leaf or 5 leaf??

I have a 55 Chevy, currently running 4 leaf springs (worn out), air shocks, and 6" drop shackles. As you can imagine; I want to redo the whole set up. Front has a 2" spindle drop, I want the rear to set slight up in the back. Will the 5 leaf raise the back slightly with replacing the shackles with stock?? If not, I can run the current shackles and drill a 2" or 3" drop as suggested in another post. I hoping to eliminate the air shocks but still have a slightly raised rear end. I don't think the 4 leaf would give me this.

I looking at the 5 leaf springs from McVieghs'. Any input would be appreciated.

I put the five leaf on my 57 and did not get the height I needed, maybe 3/4 to an inch. It was higher at first but very shortly settled down. The air shocks bring it up but between the stiffer spring package with the extra leaf and the air shocks it rides worse then a buck board. There is a fellow on eBay that sells springs that are made to raise the car 3 inches. That is the direction I will head. Now, just need to sort out a nice rear shock.

I put these shocks Monroe load leveler on the rear of my 55, because the springs were sagging http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/monroe-load-adjusting-shock-absorber-58523/19710001-P Cheaper than buying another set of springs for now anyway.

Raised the rear back up by a couple of inches....I don't think the ride is bad at all...Much better that air shocks....I started driving TriFives in '65, so I may not be as discriminating as some.

On my 55 I went with the 5 leaf, but after some settling and some issues with the springs, I went to a local spring shop and they re-arched my springs to give me the look and height I wanted. Couldn't be happier with the stance and I run 2" dropped springs up front and a 1" larger diameter rear tire. Whatever you do though you need to get rid of the air shocks, I had them and they are a horrible ride

You should be able to get either 4 or 5 leaf springs in stock height or whatever height you want.

Just buying a 5 leaf to raise the car is an invitation to not getting what you want. Ask questions from the spring supplier. If they can't answer them, find one that does, there are many out there (not to say they all know what they are doing).

The other half is assuming that what you have is the height that it started as either. Springs sag, leafs break, get abused, etc.

And stay away from air shocks, load levelers, all that crap. You don't need that with the right spring. No long shackles either.

Dragsix, leaf springs replaced ?

Did you get the 5 leaf springs w/3" lift from the ebay seller springking ? I want to ditch the air shocks and get a set of springs that will lift the rear end on my 55 chevy. If ayone has used these springs I would appreciate some measurments on a 55 wheel well to floor or pictures would be great. Thanks Ron
