I see these advertised on Ebay and was wondering about the origin. Are they a new customized version? An old customised version? They look kind of cool so just interested.
Got a link?

:) I have a blue dot's on my '56 post and chevy emblem blue dots on my '56 Handyman. Get comments all the time.

Been stopped one time for the blue dots on the post, but the cop really just wanted to look at the car. The only comment he made was "'you know those blue dots are not really legal", nice looking car, see ya later.

So when did blue dots first come out? I may be out of touch but only have seen them since I started working on the Chevy and never noticed them on an actual car.
The original blue dots were made by cutting glass marbles in half and gluing them in the center of the tail light lense... the tail lights of the 1920 and 1930 cars were very small and were 6 volt systems... The blue dots helped to make the car easier to see in the dark... Later, Dave

Isnt it funny that such a small piece of colored glass can make such a huge color difference :tu

I don't like them but it's a personal choice.

I don’t like them either. When I step on the brakes I want bright red lights to come on to alert the drivers behind me. A shade of purple may look cool but it doesn’t register in the brain the way a bright red light does. The last thing I want is someone rear ending my car because they didn’t see my brake lights in time.

By today’s standards ’56 Chevy taillights are tiny. I have personally followed a ’56 Chevy with blue dots. The brake lights were very hard to see in daylight. This is why blue dots are illegal.

I was always told they were illegal because only cop cars/motorcycles are allowed to have blue lights. Back in the 60's I remember California highway patrol motorcycles having a separate small blue light on the rear of the bike. I was told it was for identifying each other at night. Dave

Greetings from Long Branch NJ,Americas first seashore resort and 7 time US summer capital....as mentioned above blue dots have been around for years mostly used by the rod and custom cummunity....and yes illegal in many states.

They were on my 57 when I got it, so I left them on. I'm in Indiana and haven't been stopped yet (5 years driving it) by any of the area police. I have no idea if they are illegal here or not, but I did have my car inspected by a State Policeman a few years ago (required for antique plates, but not regular plates, go figure!), and it passed inspection just fine. He didn't say anything about the tail lights. Maybe, I've just been lucky.
