I'm afraid so Terry.....I have promised myself that the engine will not be coming out this time around.....Will have to do the firewall the best I can.
I thought the same thing. After weighing it out, it doesn't take that much more to take the engine and trans out, your almost there! Maybe one or two more hours. Once the engine is out then you can paint it,the front suspension, the trans and the firewall separately.
YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

THANKS for the reply Arnold.....The engine will not be coming out this go round though....No way to do it, because of the position that it is in.....Down the road it will come out and be replaced with a roller motor that I have and the dog house will be removed.

Wow David--what a familiar tune!
1. Replaced the radiator cap from a 7 to a 15---pin holes found
2. Pulled radiator--started to install new Aluminum one--doesn't fit
3. Saw leak @ front of engine--probably TC gasket
4. Pulled fan/spacer/w.pump/ps pump/alternator/hoses belts
5. Front pan gasket leaking--want to install new one
6. Tried to remove pan--no dice--crossmember in the way
7. Dropped pan as far as I could--wrestled new gasket in--2 hours
8. Reassembled all the stuff mentioned above
9. Fabricated stand-offs for new "bolt right in" radiator--hah!
10. Fan shroud won't fit
11. Cut down fan shroud--still not right
12. In laws arrive 12 days ago---truck still on blocks!:banghead:
Just about ready to shoot in-laws:blowtiedb:JIM.

Yep thats what happened to me, only add in "Dropped pan as far as I could--Wrestled gasket in--2hrs." Found that it still leaks... :sign0020:

Don't ya just love it?
Coming along though. Looking good David. :tu

Great thread. i am also suffering a bout of the "while-i-am-in-theres." pops, thanks for showing us how its done with motor in. I paid to have my motor/AT swapped removed and engine compartment while it was out painted but i gotta say after poking around inside and underneath, i found some stuff done that my father-in-law (who is a mechanical wizard i might add) said was "bull$3!+". My point being that whenever you can do something for yourself there are no surprises because you set the bar and know if any corners are being cut which seldom are. thanks for the great pics.

How did you get to sand inside the sandwiched chassis plate the spans the front suspension? wire brush? or just leave it alone?

David is it going back together yet? :D
Terry
Terry....THANKS for asking.....To answer your question.....Don't I wish.....Was busy last week spruceing up my more door for the big car show....Actually, did some painting with 2K in the driveway that didn't come out half bad.....This week I've been swapping differentials around and from the looks of things, it wasn't a minute too soon...Will post new thread on that.

Will get back on the HT next week.....Haven't turned the corner on it yet....Still needs some more sanding on the outsides of the firewall and the hood needs to come off, so I can do the hinges/springs.

Made in the Shade

My buddy came over last night and helped me get the hood off......Now, I can do the hood springs and have access to the outside firewall/cowl areas.....Did some more sanding and scraping on the firewall and inner fenders.....Starting to get some scorchers now.....So, I put my red neck ingenuity to use.....Rigged-up this sport umbrella and fan to get some relief, while working.....The wife was nice enough to come out of the AC for a couple of minutes to get the photo :sign0020:.....Plan to start doing some smoothing on the firewall tomorrow.

Nothing ******* about the umbrella David. I rigged a bracket bracket that bolts to the rear of the 57 frame that holds an umbrella so you have shade at shows that have no shade.

Hi Pops, I'm in the same pickle you are. It all started with a suspension rebuild. You're doing a great job on that engine bay. Congrats on your willpower with so many good friends egging you on to pull the engine. I got quite a chuckle out of all that. I'm looking forward to "after" pics.

Ham.....Believe it or not.....After all my kicking and screaming, lately I've been leaning toward pulling the engine and replacing it with a ZZ4 and putting a 700R behind it....I bought the shortblock from a buddy a while back.....Will need a set of heads and I have most of the rest.

Plan is to paint the frame and get the suspension put back together....Then I will be able to roll the car back and pull the engine/trans.......Will do the firewall and inner wheel wells.....Then slide the ZZ4/700R in.....Also have a 3.08 posi to go in the rear.

...and so Dave's 55 becomes the onion. Update us with more pictures too!
HMMM...Onion :confused0006: You got me on that one Dale....Not sure what's meant by that. :)

Anywho, I do have an update photo....Got the frame painted today with POR-15....The first coat is drying till it gets tacky, then I'll shoot the second.....I'll let it dry well, while I'm getting the control arms readied to go on tomorrow.

Like the layers of an onion. I wanted to clean up the front end on my wife's driveable 210 by painting the radiator filler panels. Not that many bolts, right? As I tried to take those off I realized one "hard to get to" bolt was through the lower splash shield so those came off too. Since those were off I figured I would remove the core support to get the black paint to match. But as I removed that I wanted to repaint the grille bar to match too. With that off it was only a few more bolts to get the fenders off and get the inner fenderwells to match. With those off the hood was no longer supported so it came off. Now that I had complete access to the firewall I might as well get that cleaned up. Well since I cannot get to the lower part of the firewall I might as well remove the engine and trans since there is nothing in the way now. Since the engine and trans is out I might as well replace the Power Burp with a TH350 and change from 2BC to 4BC.

A big onion. Sound familiar?

Oh Yeah! Got it now.

Was under the car painting the frame with POR-15....Some dribbled down and created this unique birth mark....Haven't got the stuff off yet....Kinda' makes me look like Gobachev's brother.
